It was… Well, it was standing, at least. The building had more holes than it had walls, and the windows were boarded shut, though not all of them. Some still had chipped glass dangling from the frame, letting in the cold air through the jagged cracks. The two Illusionists, however, were confident they could mask our presence here by cloaking the building in a veil of darkness, and Ada agreed to expand a little of her magic to heat up our bodies if the press of winter became too much to bear.

Out here, with the distance separating us from Nysa, the chances of Mordecai actually picking up on their power were playing in our favor. And if he did, as Ada assured us in the next breath, we would be long gone by the time the cavalry arrived.

Of course, all that would have to be after she returned from convincing Ivarr to join our cause.

The next point in her itinerary.

I braced myself against a chipped, white-painted vanity, the scent of damp wood invading my nostrils, and gladly waited on the sidelines for the argument to unfold.

“You know I won’t let you go alone.” Zaphine skirted around a pile of rubble dumped on the rug that had seen better days. She didn’t stop until she was bare inches from Ada’s face. “At least between the two of us, we stand a chance of stopping Ivarr’s murderous ways for long enough to get away if he decides to try something.”

“He won’t get paid for our deaths,” Ada countered, voice calm, though her arms remained crossed. “Ivarr isn’t the type to whip out blood for nothing.”

Eriyan snorted. “Now if that isn’t the worst reassurance I’ve ever heard…”

“How?” Zaphine touched a hand to Ada’s shoulder. “How can you be so sure he won’t lash out? How can you say with certainty that there isn’t a price on our heads?”

“You think the Crescent Prince would go through…unofficial channels?” I asked.

She drew her lips in a tense line. “He could have ordered one of his men to do it…”

Ada shrugged off Zaphine’s touch and sighed. “Look, you can come with me, but only if Eri feels comfortable staying with Ember alone.”

“As long as I don’t have to go, I’m fine,” he grumbled but flashed me a come-hither grin. “Besides, I like someone who can handle her sowhl.”

I chuckled as Ada barreled straight through the rubble and buried her finger in his chest. “I swear to the Stars if you so much as think about getting another pint—”

“Fine, fine.” He threw his hands up in the air. “No drinking on the job. But what if Ember—”

“No,” Zaphine and Ada snapped at the same time. Then, in a tone that left no room for arguing, Ada added, “Now that that’s settled, shut up before I decide to trade your life for Ivarr’s services.”

Eriyan plopped down into a frayed dark blue armchair, his fingers creating a legato of taps against the rolled armrest. Ada walked over to me and took my hand in hers.
